Maternal Practices of Korean Healthcare Workers in Germany

In the framework of former West German government’s “guest worker” (Gastarbeiter) recruitment policy between 1955 and 1973, more than 11,000 South Korean nurses nurse assistants moved to Germany work in medical or nursing institutions fill a gap provision healthcare services as workers.” Drawing on personal accounts, current empirical study explores mothering practices primarily 1960s 1990s families migrant workers who resided over course their working lives and/or returned Korea. This charts manner which these mothers navigated balanced competing social discourses around that emerged from different cultural historical backgrounds new host society. The concepts consist ideology “intensive mothering,” Confucian ideal “wise mother good wife,” notion “raven mother.” Special attention is paid way negotiated experienced by gendered family roles time—the period childhood adulthood—spent country.
